News about Academy for Precision Learning and Jennifer Annable

from our Board Co-Presidents Gary Ennis & Sujan Akella

On behalf of APL’s Board of Directors, we would like to share some important news with you.  At the end of the 2019-20 school year, Jennifer Annable will be retiring as Executive Director of APL.  Given her passion for the continued growth and evolution of APL, she will remain on as an advisor in the 2020-2021 school year to assist with community partnerships and relationships.  We are excited to announce that the Board of Directors has selected Kelly Meyer, currently APL’s Director of Lower School & Curriculum and Instruction, to serve as the Executive Director of APL starting in June, 2020.  Jennifer and Kelly will work closely together in the coming months to prepare for a smooth transition to Kelly’s leadership.

It is hard to encapsulate what Jennifer has meant to APL, the Experimental Education Unit (EEU), and to our community as a whole over the course of her amazing 35+ year career.  Jennifer’s passion for education, equity, community, and for all of her students over the years, is truly unparalleled.  We know we speak for all of us when we say THANK YOU.  We have all been very lucky beneficiaries of her compassion and commitment, and APL has a very bright future because of her steadfast leadership.

We are fortunate to have an educator of Kelly’s caliber to step into the executive leadership position and help us take APL into the next phase of growth and evolution.  Kelly brings a range of educational programming experience to the table as a teacher, a program developer, and a school leader, supported even further by her completion this year of the Pathways to Leadership Program through the Northwest Association of Independent Schools.  Kelly has embraced APL’s mission and focus on ensuring every student’s success through accelerated academic progress, social development, unique and tailored enrichment opportunities, character building, and community involvement.  Please join us in welcoming Kelly to this new and exciting role!

Here are a few words from Jennifer and Kelly directly:

“From the first time I saw Kelly’s application to APL, I knew she would be a great addition to our team. With APL’s support over the past two years, Kelly has been participating in the NWAIS Pathways to Leadership program. Choosing to retire has been a long time coming, it wasn’t a decision I made lightly. Turning seventy this year, and knowing we had such strong leadership in Kelly, helped me know it was the right time. I have all the faith in the world that she will continue to grow APL and hold true to its mission. I will continue to champion APL as the very best place for students all across the autism spectrum. It is also an amazing school for typically developing kids, as both of my grandchildren have been lucky enough to experience.” Jennifer Annable

“I am honored and thrilled to take on this leadership position at APL. In the two years I have been a part of the school, I have come to love our families and the mission. I have a deep respect for the dedication and commitment of our staff. Our students are so fortunate to learn alongside such a diverse and talented group of teachers and technicians. I began my career as a teacher with a commitment to social justice in the classroom and community, and am proud to continue this commitment at APL. Our model of inclusion is groundbreaking and I look forward to nurturing the school in our next chapter. APL wouldn’t be where it is without Jennifer Annable. We are so grateful for everything she has done to foster the dramatic growth of the school. Truly, Jennifer’s incredible passion for inclusive education and for APL inspired me as a school leader. Jennifer has agreed to stay on in an advisory role to help support my transition into this role.”  Kelly Meyer

We will be honoring Jennifer’s distinguished career serving the cause of special needs inclusion and education at the 2020 APL Auction on February 29th.  We are also launching the Jennifer Annable Legacy Fund to grow financial support of APL’s ongoing efforts to deliver quality inclusive education and increase our impact in the broader community.

Again, please join us in a heartfelt thank you to Jennifer for all she has done to champion our community over the years, and in welcoming Kelly as the next great leader of APL!

Thank You,

Gary Ennis & Sujan Akella

Co-Presidents, APL Board of Directors

The Academy for Precision Learning Granted $,to Help Fund Elementary Library

SEATTLE – The Academy for Precision Learning (APL) is pleased to announce a $2650 grant from the Build-A-Bear Workshop® Bear Hugs Foundation. The grant will be used to create a leveled library for kindergarten and first grade students.

APL is a private, non-profit school that provides an educational experience where children on the autism spectrum can learn alongside their typically developing peers during the entire course of the school day. With the help of this grant from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation, APL’s new leveled library will give kindergarten and first grade students the opportunity to learn to read no matter what reading, writing or language ability they have. In addition, the library will assist teachers in language arts instruction and will provide a reading system that can be utilized for years to come.

“In an inclusion based class, with kids of varying needs, a leveled library system addresses the most fundamental needs for language arts education,” said, Jennifer Annable, Executive Director at APL. “April is Autism Awareness Month so this grant couldn’t have come at a better time for our growing school. We ultimately hope to expand this library to provide additional leveled learning resources for our higher grades.”

The Academy for Precision Learning is located in Seattle’s vibrant University District. The school is now accepting applications for students from Kindergarten to 10th grade. APL is dedicated to the success of all students – including typically developing and those across the autism spectrum – learning within an academically challenging and socially vibrant environment.

For more information about APL or to make a donation to the school, please visit www.aplschool.org or call 206.427.0115. About the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation: The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation is committed to making life more bearable for children, families and pets in need of the kindness of others. The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation gifts grants to qualified nonprofit organizations that support the health and wellness of children and families, the care and welfare of animals and the promotion of literacy and education for all.

APL and Broadway Bound were proud to present Grease and the Lion King!

June 2010 – Broadway Bound Children’s Theatre transforms the lives of children through active participation in theatre arts and the production with APL was a unique demonstration of this mission. Broadway Bound partnered with APL to produce a ground breaking performance of the crowd pleaser Grease and songs from the Lion King.

This powerful local partnership demonstrates that children of all skill levels and backgrounds can be challenged and supported while developing their mental, physical and creative potential through the joy and discipline of live theatre.

These performances truly demonstrated that inclusion not only works – it’s something to be celebrated.
