June 23, 2021

Dear APL community,

This legislative session, states across the country have introduced and passed a record-breaking number of laws targeting trans people, especially trans youth. These laws aim to exclude trans youth from participating in sports, sometimes by using invasive examinations; deny them vital medical care; and, in some cases, restrict the ability of trans people to obtain birth certificates reflecting their true selves. These laws frighten and dehumanize members of an already marginalized population. Arkansas’ decision to call its new, transphobic law the ‘S.A.F.E. Act’ is especially cruel because research shows that access to transition-related care during adolescence can relieve gender dysphoria and help our transgender children live happy, healthy lives. For trans youth, and families of trans youth, reading the news can feel like being under siege. One of the bills was introduced here in Washington, though it never made it to the floor for a vote.

APL rejects transphobia in all its forms, especially when it’s aimed at children. Our transgender students, family, and faculty enrich our community and we stand against transphobic and discriminatory legislation.

We are committed to maintaining a welcoming, supportive space for transgender students and to taking what action we can to speak out for transgender people in Seattle and Washington State. LBGTQ+ topics are embedded in our social sciences and history curricula, just as they should be in every school. Our counseling staff is always here for any students who are struggling to process what is happening in the world around them.

We are committed to doing our part to end transphobia. We as a school have the power to educate students and the community at large and can also be a beacon of support for our transgender community.

Warmly,

Kelly Meyer (she/her)

Executive Director

Kelly Meyer, Executive Director

As we welcome new families into our APL community, I want to assure everyone that our APL team is eager to meet with you, to get to know your child and your family, and to support you as we make our way back into the school setting this summer and fall. It will no doubt present us with numerous challenges, and you can expect support, flexibility, and creativity as we navigate our return.

The APL South Upper School campus is coming along and will be our site for 6th through 12 graders participating in the Extended School Year (ESY) summer program. The building has been getting a face lift with new paint, carpet, and electrical updates. We are also making progress on the occupational kitchen, which will be an exciting part of our program beginning in fall 2021! Students enrolled in ESY will be invited to visit the campus in the coming weeks to help them get acclimated to the new location. We will host open house tours (dates TBA) later this summer to encourage all our students and families to pay the new campus a visit.

The APL UHeights Lower School campus will also get a refresh with new paint and several classrooms will shift around as we get more elbow room for our kindergarten through 5th grade students. ESY for K-5 students will take place on the UHeights campus. Like our upper school students, we will offer some open house hours to come visit the building and see the classroom spaces ahead of ESY, and as we launch the school year in August. We will have two blended classrooms at the Lower School this fall, a Kindergarten/1st and a 1st/2nd grade class. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes will each be in their own classrooms. And we will have a fine arts studio for electives.

In the coming weeks we will share specific elementary classroom information, including your child’s teacher, their classroom BCBA (if applicable), and other academic staff available to support your child’s education. For our upper school students, we will introduce new faculty and clinical staff later this summer.

Over the coming weeks we hope your children enjoy connecting with peers in field day, flipping through the yearbook, and attending live and virtual promotion celebrations. We will hold a private, in-person ceremony for our seniors on June 18 at 11:30 am and celebrate them at a reception in the south lot at APL immediately following. Please keep an eye on your inbox for a link to watch the ceremony, featuring guest speaker Mickey Rowe, an autistic actor and Seattle native.

Finally, thank you all for your partnership in educating your children. It has been a hard road this year. Thank you for hanging in there with us. And for those families just joining us, I look forward to seeing and talking with each of you in the new school year, making memories, and (maybe?) someday laughing about that year we had school in a pandemic.

We are honored that so many members of our community stepped forward through GiveBIG on Wednesday and Thursday, May 4 and 5, 2021, to help us renovate our new South Campus building, increase classroom space, and grow our services.

With donations made directly through our GiveBIG page plus matching funds, our community dedicated $19,000 toward APL “Branching Out.” Thank you.

APL’s “South Campus” building near the corner of NE 47th St. and Roosevelt in Seattle, WA’s University District – just blocks from our main campus.

If you didn’t get a chance to support this project during the official GiveBIG campaign, the campaign page remains open at givebigwa.org/APL, or make a donation any time on our website at aplschool.org/giving.

APL’s 2021 GiveBIG campaign will be dedicated to supporting our expansion as we “Branch Out” to our South Campus.

Located just blocks away on Roosevelt Ave. NE, this additional space will allow us to serve more students – both at that location and at our traditional location in University Heights.

We will also be able to expand the programs we offer to create student success – including independent living experiences, a working kitchen, a school store and speech-language pathology.

Watch the video below where we announced the expansion at our February 2021 online auction.

Early giving is open as of April 20, 2021 – donations may be scheduled up until the campaign launches and runs on May 4 and 5. Make your gift at https://www.givebigwa.org/APL . If you have any questions, e-mail us at development@aplschool.org. Thank you for your commitment to APL’s students and mission.
