Executive Director

Jennifer has a breadth of experience working with children, with and without special needs, from birth through high school. She was the 2010 recipient of the Division of Early Childhood (DEC)'s Rose C. Engel Award for Excellence in Professional Practice. This national award recognizes the highest standards of practice in the education field. Jennifer received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has a Master's in Education and a Principal's Certificate from the University of Washington. She is certified in Early Childhood Special Education, K-12 Special Education and K-8 Elementary Education. Prior to joining APL, Jennifer spent 25 years at the University of Washington's Experimental Education Unit where she was Principal and most recently Director.

Kelly is pursuing her doctorate in curriculum studies, teacher preparation, and professional development at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and earned her Masters Degree from the University of Missouri in 2009. She comes to APL with a background in middle school education, community literacy and writing center instruction. She has over a decade of experience designing and implementing experiential-learning curriculum in the classroom, the community, and abroad. Kelly is thrilled to join the team at APL and looks forward to getting to know students, supporting teachers, and continuing to grow academic programming at APL. When she isn’t at school, Kelly loves reading books, traveling near and far, trying new recipes, and spending time with her family.

Kirk became interested in APL because two of his three sons are on the spectrum. He has been a fundraiser in the Seattle area since 1994 and joined APL as the Director of Advancement in early 2017. He has led fundraising, community relations and government affairs for organizations such as Seattle Children’s Museum, The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc., Youth Eastside Services and Pacific Science Center. He has a BA and MA in English from the University of Idaho and a Master's in Nonprofit Leadership from Seattle University. He has been a nonprofit board or advisory council member for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) - Advancement Northwest Chapter, the Inland Northwest Lighthouse, the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation, and the University District Rotary Club. He is a frequent trainer and presenter on fundraising and public affairs topics at local seminars and national conferences. He enjoys long-distance running and would love to talk with you about Star Trek and Blade Runner trivia. He lives in North Seattle with his sons and wife.

Alicia received her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Washington. She has been at APL since 2013, supporting high school students and families with their transition into young-adulthood. Alicia holds a certification in school social work and is working on her licensure as an Independent Clinical Social Worker. As the High School Program Director, Alicia focuses on the whole child to create the most meaningful and individualized experience for each student. In her spare time, Alicia enjoys spending time with her family, playing with her dog, and exploring the local beaches.

Shelly has been with APL for over 10 years, always serving the organization with excitement and passion. She has worn many hats in her time at the school including BT, 7/8 Teacher, and now as part of the Administrative Team. Each position has helped her grow and change. She graduated with a BA in Theater and BA in Psychology from Siena Heights University in 2004 and has worked in schools and with children since 2002. She loves heading up the theater program and watching the students blossom on stage. You can find Shelly popping her head into the classrooms and helping out wherever it is needed.

Laura first came to APL in 2012 as a behavior technician while completing her M.Ed. in Special Education & Applied Behavior Analysis at the University of Washington. After receiving her BCBA certification in 2013, Laura served as the Behavior Analyst (BCBA, LBA) for the K/1 classroom for five years before transitioning to her new role as the Assistant Clinical Director for the 2018-19 school year. Laura comes from a huge family of teachers and has been working in the field of special education for about 10 years. Joining the APL community has allowed Laura to combine her passions for ABA and education, and she is thrilled to be serving the school and clinic in new and exciting ways this year! In her free time, she enjoys crafting, reading, thrift shopping, and going for long walks around Seattle with her husband.

Michelle has spent the last five years working in advancement for non-profit organizations throughout Seattle including the Seattle Children’s Museum and the Nordic Heritage Museum. Born and raised in Seattle as an avid Husky fan, Michelle earned her B.A. in History and M.A. in Museum Studies at the University of Washington. In addition to advancement and nonprofit administration, she focused her studies on program evaluation and development, working in partnership with local organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Pacific Science Center, and the Seattle Aquarium. In her free time, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband and rambunctious fox terrier, Mally.

This is Maggie’s fifth year at APL, and her first year as a co-teacher! She studied psychology at Lewis & Clark College, and after graduating, spent a year in Ireland as an au pair before returning to Seattle and starting at APL. Outside of school she likes to hike, garden, and bake. In the classroom she enjoys singing songs, teaching science, and reading books aloud to the K/1 all stars.

Amanda is excited for her second year at APL and first year as a co-teacher in K/1. She grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and graduated with her degree in Elementary and Special Education from Northern Arizona University. She worked as a behavior technician for three years before moving to Seattle for the BCBA program at UW. In her free time she loves to be outside hiking, mountain biking, camping, and adventuring. At school, she loves leading read-alouds and collaborating with the teaching team to support each student.

After spending 10 years providing ABA services in homes around the Seattle area, she is so excited to join the APL community! In her free time, she enjoys playing board games, hiking, camping, and spending time with family and friends.

Matt is a fourth year BT at APL, and has spent 5 years as a Behavior Tech in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. He is attending the University of Washington, earning a Master's in Special Education with an emphasis on ABA. After 11 years of playing music as a drummer and songwriter in the Seattle area, Matt has cultivated a love for music and the collaborative process across all aspects of his life. He loves singing and incorporating music into instruction and communication with students. After completing his degree, Matt hopes to become a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst and continue striving to make a positive impact in the lives of people across a diverse neurological spectrum.

Je'Warren moved to Seattle in 2008 from Los Angeles. He was working in youth homeless services for 6 years before getting into childcare/education in 2014. This is his third year at APL and his first in the 7/8 classroom. He studied Sociology and Psychology at the University of Southern Indiana, and gravitated towards APL by way of three completely different referrals from friends. They all told him it would be the perfect fit, and he’s so excited to be here! He has worked with a broad variety of age groups and backgrounds, from at-risk teenagers to inner-city grade-schoolers. When he’s not working to help strengthen his community, Je’Warren enjoys skateboarding, writing poetry, playing the drums, drawing, and coastal road trips.

Kurt moved to Seattle last fall, after a year of traveling, photographing and exploring the United States. Once he learned about the APL school and met the team, I knew he knew he wanted to work here. He has 6 years of experience as a Teaching Assistant. His artistic outlets include film and digital photography, and he also enjoys playing tounge drums, flutes, and the harmonica!

Kayla found her way to APL after a long history of working in science, and with children in unconventional educational and therapeutic settings. After applying her degree in neurobiology to Alzheimer's' research, she shifted her focus to behavioral and mental health, working in the foster care system to address the effects of trauma on development. She has consistently found working with children to be a replenishing source of creativity and meaning. She spends her free time organizing an intentional co-housing co-op, leading several philosophy reading groups, doing art and music, and spying on birds.

She is also very eager to start skiing and snowboarding!

Anne is teaches Functional Academics in the High School. She has taught elementary, middle, high school, and even preschool. She is very happy to return to teaching high school, has worked in several inclusive schools, and is very excited by APL’s model of inclusion. She finds joy in supporting students as they discover their own needs, challenges, interests, strengths, and passions and in working to facilitate them reaching their own unique potentials. When not at school she enjoys the great outdoors, cooking, yoga, and getting together with friends.

John is enjoying his first year at APL. He was lured by the opportunity to work with a small close-knit community of learners, where every teacher knows every student. Coming to APL was also a sort of homecoming, as John earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Washington. He particularly enjoys verifying trigonometric identities. John enjoys outdoor outings with his wife and two children that involve hiking to waterfalls and caves in the summer and snowshoeing in the winter. His favorite number is pi, he has a strange fascination with cows, and can easily be rooked into playing a game of chess. John spends spare time at home tending to yard work, giving the two family dogs a bath, feeding the fish in the backyard pond, or just wishing he could bask for hours under a heat lamp the same way the turtle does.

Daisy found APL through networking with friends in the field. Their parents met at a waterfront disco which explains their devotion to music and its power to connect people. After earning a BA from WWU in Human Services, they worked in Alaska for two years as a Family Services Coordinator. As an avid champion of freedom, they're always learning how to improve education systems for the benefit of both the individual and greater society. Jay began working for APL in Fall 2018. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at the University of Washington, and volunteered for the Crisis Line (now known as Crisis Connections). He is passionate in providing empathy and support for those undergoing emotional distress, and practices being as selfless as possible every day. In his free time he loves jogging, bicycling, PC building, and hip hop dancing.

Inspired by his experience at Camp Parkview, he connected with staff and started working at Organization for Research and Learning, working with kids affected with autism. Born in Landsthul, Germany, Frankie grew up in Prince George Virginia. He served 6 years in the Army National Guard in Field Artillery. Passionate about drawing and painting, he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Printing and Printmaking. In his free time, he loves going outdoors to paint from nature. He loves hiking, running, dogs-especially pugs, huskies, and French Bulldogs, New York pizza, reading about art, British comedies, and listening to and making music on his Mac through Logic. He also enjoys singing 80’s and 90’s Country music which he listened to growing up in rural Virginia as a kid.

This is Genevieve's first year at APL, and she is excited to join the team! She is a mother of two, and a 3rd-year PsyD student in Counseling Psychology at Northwest University. When not at work or school, she loves spending time with her children, going to the movies, and engaging in various art-based activities. In the future, she's looking forward to working in research and clinical practice, helping children and youth find success in their learning and lives.
