June 4, 2021
As we welcome new families into our APL community, I want to assure everyone that our APL team is eager to meet with you, to get to know your child and your family, and to support you as we make our way back into the school setting this summer and fall. It will no doubt present us with numerous challenges, and you can expect support, flexibility, and creativity as we navigate our return.
The APL South Upper School campus is coming along and will be our site for 6th through 12 graders participating in the Extended School Year (ESY) summer program. The building has been getting a face lift with new paint, carpet, and electrical updates. We are also making progress on the occupational kitchen, which will be an exciting part of our program beginning in fall 2021! Students enrolled in ESY will be invited to visit the campus in the coming weeks to help them get acclimated to the new location. We will host open house tours (dates TBA) later this summer to encourage all our students and families to pay the new campus a visit.
The APL UHeights Lower School campus will also get a refresh with new paint and several classrooms will shift around as we get more elbow room for our kindergarten through 5th grade students. ESY for K-5 students will take place on the UHeights campus. Like our upper school students, we will offer some open house hours to come visit the building and see the classroom spaces ahead of ESY, and as we launch the school year in August. We will have two blended classrooms at the Lower School this fall, a Kindergarten/1st and a 1st/2nd grade class. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes will each be in their own classrooms. And we will have a fine arts studio for electives.
In the coming weeks we will share specific elementary classroom information, including your child’s teacher, their classroom BCBA (if applicable), and other academic staff available to support your child’s education. For our upper school students, we will introduce new faculty and clinical staff later this summer.
Over the coming weeks we hope your children enjoy connecting with peers in field day, flipping through the yearbook, and attending live and virtual promotion celebrations. We will hold a private, in-person ceremony for our seniors on June 18 at 11:30 am and celebrate them at a reception in the south lot at APL immediately following. Please keep an eye on your inbox for a link to watch the ceremony, featuring guest speaker Mickey Rowe, an autistic actor and Seattle native.
Finally, thank you all for your partnership in educating your children. It has been a hard road this year. Thank you for hanging in there with us. And for those families just joining us, I look forward to seeing and talking with each of you in the new school year, making memories, and (maybe?) someday laughing about that year we had school in a pandemic.
